Runway video & pics: Rock band KISS joins Varvatos for Spring/Fall Collection debut

“For me, it is the idea of the superhero, a man in disguise with incredible powers, that makes the KISS myth so enduring and appealing, and it’s exactly that mindset that I wanted to explore, adding a dash of fantasy to my work while keeping tailored finesse and elegance high on the agenda.” – John VarvatosJohn Varvatos has taken the next quantum leap bringing 70s glam rock, heavy metal superheroes KISS to his new Spring and Fall 2014 collections.  Truly a rock star collection, and featuring newly-inducted Rock’n’Roll Hall of Famers KISS in the Spring advertising campaign.

Marked by KISS-inspired male models (see pictorial), John Varvatos new collection stays true to form with slim cut, clean lines and laden in KISS-inspired silver and black themes, along with metallics and whites.  With materials ranging from silk and cashmere to flannel and washed calfskin the collection adds an edgy, vintage-inspired feel to Varvatos’ usual leather-clad themes.  In addition to suits and outerwear the collection is also rounded-out by a mix of accessories that include “massive thick-soled leather boots”, hats totes and portfolio bags.  “I wanted to sprinkle a little magic dust throughout the clothes in this collection, highlighting the idea of sartorial daring and masculine confidence that is integral to my vision, bringing it to a new level.” added Varvatos.

Shot by renowned photog in Danny Cinch, the  DUMBO, the accompanying Varvatos’ Spring/Fall 2014 KISS campaign brings 70s attitude in full force.  Part street and part vintage glam, the collection gives a highly stylized and modernized look to ready-to-wear designs that harken back to the  Bowery, LES and Village in their primal heydays.  Given that Varvatos’ Bowery store is housed in the former location of now defunct concert venue CBGBs, the references are quite apropos.  (For the uninitiated the Bowery store is well worth a visit to experience the restored graffiti walls, stage and other memorobilia, let alone the shopping experience.)
